HOW TO SHIP A CAR TO CANADA

When you have planned to relocate to Canada, the main concern you will be facing is the shifting of things along with you and the things that should be taken with you. Surely your precious car will find a place in the list but there are many rules that have to be strictly adhered to before you take up the process of shipping your car.

First and foremost you need to ascertain if your vehicle qualifies for such transportation or entry into the country. Customs and safety procedures play a major role in this process.

When you import a car which is manufactured in the USA:

  • You must remember that your car will not be considered as imported officially unless it is certified by the Registrar of Imported Vehicles in Canada.
  • Even if you have paid the required taxes and customs duty for the car, it will not be allowed to continue to run in the country if it does not meet the requirements.
  • If a vehicle has been changed except for the regular maintenance purposes, such as converting a vehicle with high roof or stretched or lengthened, it cannot be imported to Canada.
  • You need to get the constraints for importing from the RIV before the actual move takes place.

If you plan to bring in a vehicle from countries other than USA

  • Your vehicle should have met all the requirements of the country apart from specific circumstances such as the owner having had the vehicle in Canada originally and the vehicle after some years is being shipped to Canada with all the compliance intact.
  • Your vehicle will be considered new only when it is taken directly from the manufacturer and the documents should show clearly about the same.
  • You should have obtained the authorization from the Transport Canada before you submit the vehicle for import at the border. If there is no proper authorization, the shipping of the vehicle is liable to be refused.
  • If your vehicle is more than 15 years old, they are exempted from the RIV regulations and they will be classified under Section 16 of the regulations.
  • As a visitor to the country as a student or on a temporary basis, you will be entitled to bring your vehicle into the country.
  • You cannot sell the vehicle or dispose it in any other manner.

Shipping a car to Canada will not pose any problem when you are clearly knowledgeable about the rules pertaining to the purpose. So find out the regulations and follow them strictly so that your precious car will be with you when you are in Canada!!
