HOW TO SHIP A CAR TO ENGLAND
Shipping a car to England not only requires your complete focus but also many formalities that need to be completed prior to handing over the vehicle to the shipping company.
A certificate of Mutual Recognition may have to be obtained which will depend on the type of vehicle you are bringing in and the registration. A left hand drive car will require this formality to be completed if it is registered within EU. In such a case, you may have to declare the suitability of the vehicle for using in UK, such as the dipping of headlight beam to the left side, alterations needed, and the receipts from garage as proof.
Registration: When you want to import a car to UK on a permanent basis, you have to register the same by following all the necessary instructions. Apart from this, you should provide documents such as:
- Form V267 to declare that the vehicle is a new one.
- Any documents to indicate that the vehicle was registered in some other country
- Document with date of collection of the vehicle
- The relevant forms to indicate that the required duty or VAT has been paid by you
- VAT is not required when you are eligible for relief offered for transfer of residence which is possible when you have stayed outside UK for a minimum period of 12 months.
- You should have owned it for at least 6 months
- All the documents that you submit should be original ones
A vehicle without UK registration number cannot be driven in UK. Only when you work for some other European Union member state and you are given a company car with EU registration, you can drive the car temporarily in the country. The DVLA would advise you to transport the vehicle than drive it from the port.
In case of temporary shipping, you should establish that you do not plan to stay in UK permanently and you will be permitted to use the vehicle only for a period of maximum 12 months. You should have paid the tax and the vehicle should have been registered in the country of origin.
The most important aspects that should be followed without any deviation are:
- Learning how your car is going to be shipped – RoRo method is obviously the best. You just need to drive your vehicle to the ramp of the ship and you don’t need any mechanical assistance.
- Removing all items in the vehicle except for the jack and the spare tire.
- Availability of marine insurance to protect your vehicle from any damage or loss during the transit.
