  • As a non-Italian, you are permitted to import one vehicle free of duty if you are able to submit proof your ownership of the vehicle at least for the last months, though one year period is highly preferred.
  • If your ownership of the vehicle is less than one year, the car cannot be disposed or lent in any way for at least a period of one year after arriving in Italy.
  • If you are an Italian returning to the country after staying abroad for some time, at least one year, you are eligible to import the car without paying any duty and you need to have a proof that you are the owner of the vehicle since the last six months minimum.
  • As a diplomat to the country, you should be present in the country much prior to the arrival of the vehicle so that you have all the necessary documents from the country. You should be present when you are releasing the vehicle.
  • You need to have documents that show the complete details about the car.
  • There are restrictions when your vehicle has engine capacity of more than 2000 cc.
  • You may have to pay required duty failing which the vehicle will be sent back to the country of origin.
  • Insurance policy which is acceptable in Italy

You may have to pay the cost to the shipping companies depending on the port you are sending it to. Additional fees may also be required towards customs duty, emission testing, and safe transportation. Registration of the vehicle should be completed within six months after its arrival into the country.

By abiding the rules of Italy without any deviation, you can experience a smooth shipping of your car to the country and can avoid paying any penalties for violation of the specifications. Know the rules thoroughly before working on importing the car to Italy.
