HOW TO IMPORT A CAR TO GERMANY

If you are into the process of moving to the Federal Republic of Germany, it is very obvious that you would want to take your personal goods too which requires some procedures to be followed without any deviation.

Your car may be very precious to you and so you may want to import that too. For this:

  • You should have got the vehicle registered as needed to prove that you are the sole owner and that you have been using the same for the last six months at least prior to moving.
  • To suit the standards stipulated by Germany, you may have to make some alterations to your vehicle.
  • You can approach the Technical Inspection Organization that is nearest to your location for this purpose.
  • The government warns people to exercise caution about fake certificates.
  • You have to provide the authorities details like chassis number, manufacturer of the vehicle, type of the car, and the model year.
  • If your car is brand new, duty should be paid at the local tax office and the proof should be submitted. A tax clearance certificate is also needed from the Federal Motor vehicle Authority.
  • You will not pay any duty if yours is a used vehicle if you have already paid the VAT in the country of origin.
  • Other documents like original vehicle registration details, insurance documents, certificate of exhaust emission test, and tax clearance certificates have to be produced.

You need to register the vehicle in Germany and for this you have to produce:

  • Identity proof and residency
  • If the registration has to be done as a company car, you need to submit the extract copy from business registration.
  • When a third party is registering, you have to get a letter of the owner authorizing the person and the copy of the owner’s passport should be submitted.
  • Roadworthiness certificate has to be produced
  • License plates of the vehicle

Once these formalities are completed, and the documents of registration in the other country will be returned to the authorities in the other country. The number plates that were originally fixed to the car will be returned.

When the rules stipulated by the government of Germany are followed without any violation, importing a car into the country will not pose any problem to you!! Know the rules before starting the process.
